Forbidden Fruit

As the fine folks at Onestoppoetry make their way to the Big Apple in the hopes of cementing a win in the coveted Shorty Awards, this weeks Friday Poetically with Brian Miller, has chosen New York as the theme of our inspiration.  It is a city I have never had the pleasure of visiting..yet, but the desire is always there.  So much inspiration to be gleaned from the art inspired by this living, breathing, city...and this is my humble offering.

Forbidden Fruit

Gritty, surreal
Neon backdrop
Flush against an electric sky.
The stars would not dare
To shine so bright.
Assaulted by the bodies
Absorbing their energy
Their secrets
With an unwanted touch
Knowing their dreams
Knowing their fears
Disguised in a flesh
Not my own.
The School of Ashcan
Could not have prepared me for this
Though they captured her essence
The industrial vibe
Of progress, growth,
The romance of the arts
Teasing and delightful
The world has seen her suffer
Targeted for her opulence
The vision of a dream
Stone torch
Let freedom ring
Could any apple taste so sweet
As the one bitten
Beneath the light of Broadway
Though her borders I have yet to cross
The desire still remains
As the taste of the Forbidden
So often does.

Oh, it sounds like you've already experienced the city many times, through many eyes. You just haven't set foot in it yet. So perceptive and heartfelt. Love it, Natasha.

A superbly written piece. The abstract imagery compliments the visions of New York in light and sound and texture.

I love how you've combined the peronsal and archihtectural, and artistic elements of what you imagine the city to be like into a flast flowing, take-it-all-in walk through her imaginary streets. The closing gives the idea that even though you know this combination of sights and sounds and unwanted energy may not be the best thing, it may be something that has to had, anyway. My favorite section, ' beginning at The School of Ashcan' and ending at 'targeted for her opulence' mirrors that same dichotomy in the artistic and commercial history of the city. Another great poem with so much more going on beneath the surface. Food for big apple thought! :)

You nailed it with the word painting describing the:

Neon backdrop
Flush against an electric sky.
The stars would not dare
To shine so bright.

I especially like the reference to the 'electric sky' and the intimidation of even the stars.

Though her borders I have yet to cross
The desire still remains
As the taste of the Forbidden
So often does.

Beautiful parallel drawn between the desire and the taste of forbidden fruit. Very seductive. I hope someday you will cross her borders and will find New York to be all you imagined she would be. Good work here!
