The Unsung Song~One Shot Wednesday

Once again I have found myself running to some old favorites for inspiration.  I picked the painting, let my pen go, and this is the result.  Hoping the awesome folks over at Oneshot Wednesday have had some better luck than I, and I am looking forward to a wonderful evening of reading ahead of me compliments of Onestop Poetry.

The Unsung Song

Histories are forever waiting to be written
By the victors of battles waged
Steal the pen to salute the one
Who has the song
To yet be sung.

Warriors are forever ready to do battle
War painted like Picasso
Fighting through Cubism
When he had the song
To yet be sung

Women are forever ready to love
And sometimes don't survive it
Hoping only to tell the tale
The melody of a song
Yet to be sung.

Men forever fumble to protect
In haste, but so endearing
Their Picasso War paint smeared
In their hurry to sing the song
That has yet been sung.

The Earth cries out in anger
Against the abuse
Our mere existence brings
And thus brings forth the starting note
Of the song that has yet to be sung.

Old Guitarist
Picasso

“Everyone wants to understand art. Why don’t we try to understand the song of a bird? Why do we love the night, the flowers, everything around us, without trying to understand them? But in the case of a painting, people think they have to understand. If only they would realize above all that an artist works of necessity, that he himself is only an insignificant part of the world, and that no more importance should be attached to him than to plenty of other things which please us in the world though we can’t explain them; people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree.” - Picasso

as picasso that fights through cubism...ha....yes, there are songs to be sung yet but often i find they come when we give up trying so hard, much like understanding art or a birds song...smiles.

Nice piece. I enjoy those that can work as a poem or a song, I've always found a tiny thread between them. In my opinion, your use of repetition carries this piece remarkably well. Love the references and the whole idea of the unsung nature. thanks for sharing:)

"Steal the pen to salute the one / Who has the song / To yet be sung." Wow, this is such a universally strong statement. What an amazing result of the beautiful painting you chose for inspiration!

Well done Natasha...the rhythm of your poem is indeed like a song leading to Picasso's marvelous quote. So many forms of art need not be "understood" or explained...they simply must be experienced with the eyes, ears, heart and hands.

What a great poem, Tasha!
"Their Picasso War paint smeared
In their hurry to sing the song
That has yet been sung."
Makes me think of art and poetry in many ways, especially from the standpoint of latent creativity.

A favorite Picasso of mine, so glad to see it used in prompt and you served it so well. The final stanza has power in its lingering thought. Beautiful write! ~ Rose

Think you just sung one that hadn't been sung, but there are so many that will arise to the weary or the wise. Like your play on the two genders too.

So glad you made the effort to tackle this Natasha. It resonates with some really under the hood thoughts about art, about where it comes from, why it comes. Esp liked "Women are forever ready to love/And sometimes don't survive it..." And you're spot on about the protecting thing also. Well done.

I find it intriguing what people do with paintings, be it attempt to copy it or to use it as a springboard to other realms. What you have done here is wonderful, Tash.

"The song that has yet to be sung." Brilliant! Someone should write a poem about this, and someone has. YOU! I love this line so much that I've added it to my poetic memory. Yet again, your words inspire and resonate with me like a familiar bell. Thanks! James.

That unsung song can be so may things, all of them worthy to be sung, and this great poem touches on so many of them so very well. Reading the verse about warriors and it's mention of Picasso that you're not talking about the armies of empire, but rather creative armies of all types struggling to be heard and move through their artistic discipline. Ultimately, in the gently rhythm of your precise words, I think you've captured something essential about being a poet, or a painter, or a feeling outsider of any kind. We all have the unsung song to be sung which is always greater than the song sung by those who steal the pen. Very powerful!
