Think About It ~ OpenLinkNight

So tell me...whose life have you been living?

Could we take a moment...perhaps strip away
the dogma that has been taught to you?
Force fed on spoons and forks

that have never once left your mouth.
Who are you I ask, and without thought
like a perfectly timed reaction

you toss me a name. If it is unique
to who you are, then yes, perhaps
you are truly special. I prefer to see it

as the first attack. Who named you?

and who named this religion that
has shaped more than just your Sunday mornings?
I challenge you now, really let go

and let god. Not by Constantine's definition,
look beyond the Eye of Horus
to the divinity that was born

when you were. Already known,
forced to be forgotten at the hands
of agenda driven politicians

who planted the seemingly innocent mustard seed.

Let us look now, to every bit of history
that came through textbooks developed
by the man with the plan.

Every bias, every fear
fabricated to ensure complacency
Every discipline issue, learning problem

Medicated to breed foot soldiers
beaten down based on social status
placed on you by a 50 year old primary teacher

Whose only mission is to break you.

How much of who you are is based
on the village, the country you call home?
The teachers, the doctors, the friends

who make you feel less for your art?
Who brands you as odd because you
brave original thought? Every prescription

granted to quell your uniqueness
To make you fit better, to help you feel
normal. To better assign you to a worthwhile position

Within societal ranks....one where you won't hurt yourself.

And what of these rulers who expect you
to believe all they do is for you? While they replace
the batteries on the strings they use

to police the you you seem to think you are.
This "government" who knows you better than anyone
based on status, income, geography, kin

defining your usefulness, your contribution to a cause
you never knew you were marching for. Creating war
to keep you working, while lining silken pockets

One new fee, one new tax, one new devil at a time.

But don't forget...you've got their god on your side.
Now lets have some real fun
let's take away the borders...

restrictions based on conscription
invisible trade barriers control your movements indefinitely
ready with a whole new name for you

if you dare to cross the line. Ah, freedom
a wonderful thing to cherish.
Shall we take this experiment to the world?

Imagine we have all stripped away the trappings
of this supposed civilized society.
And let us look now to our true brothers and sisters

Nameless, ego less, penniless and with no country
Look into their eyes and in the reflection
See the true you looking back...the real you.

In the name of humanity, cut the god damn strings!
We are human beings, we matter, we have value
We are more than notches in political bedposts

Let the you that has been smothered...breathe.
Let the you that has been beaten...heal
Let the you that they have wanted fall away

to reveal the you, you were always meant to be.

Well...that was a marathon of words and my first rant of 2012....all in the name of OpenLinkNight at dVersePoets, where Brian Miller will be trying to keep all the poets in line.  Resolve to Evolve dear friends, and let your words be heard.  Bring them to the pub and we'll do our best to take them to the world...no borders here :) The party gets underway at 3pmEST Hope to see you there.

Wow, biting! I think I may have a new fave of yours. Love the conversational/questioning form of this one. And I love the one sentence stanzas peppered throughout - powerful - especially "One new fee, one new tax, one new devil at a time." Wow.

All borders are in our minds.

And this is the best thing I've read from you so far. Off the charts!

I agree -- we allow ourselves to be smothered and fed stuff that does not matter to our souls.

Magnificent! I really like the part about the batteries that pull the strings -- nice image, Tash!

Excellent strong and principled piece, Natasha, with a steady build to a powerful ending. Couldn't agree more. As we used to say back in the Sixties--"If they give you lined paper, write the other way."

Love the rant...I believe that the real "I" is too smothered by protocol, rules and restrictions.

And Happy Birthday to you ~ Cheers ~

I love angry people with meaningful anger. This is Orwellian, but also hopeful and revolutionary. So we'll all eat borscht! Wonderful write! A favorite for me, Tash! Excelsior!

Your words here are powerful and challenging and the ideas they support are complex, but you've written them with clarity driven by the passion behind them. I've tried to pick a favorite line or phrase or stanza but can't and as always am so impressed at your words merge the personal and global. Again, powerful words that demand consideration.

This is a call to arms, battle off the expectations of others and know yourself. Powerful, powerful... Poets are always searching to know themselves completely and never seem to find that unique definition. Love this.

nice ''rant'' here….a new year's resolve and wish.
socialization, acculturation, civilization….the pulpit of the politician. I guess there 'is' a 1984 with us.
this is a call of the wild from the wild….to be natural, commonsensical and true to oneself.

a nice ranting-poem to read.
thanks for sharing tash.

happy birthday to you

sorry, nirvana was playing in the background as i typed this so it got a little surreal...hope the birthday was great...smiles...

Great rant, Natasha! I think you've covered the entire socio-political waterfront, and kept the reader's interest throughout. No mean feat.

"...notches in political bedposts." This is great! I think many of us are beginning to feel that way with the onset of the US primary election season.

Wow!!! "Look into their eyes and in the reflection
See the true you looking back...the real you." You said it sister!
Hm. You may mean the "Eye of Horus" in that one line, although it is amusing to consider the other -- and perhaps you meant to bring a smile.

Your rant makes good points. The individual needs to individuate, especially in your late teens or early 20s. After that, though, your new self-idenified social identity needs to find relationships that nurture that self and allow you the possibility of nurturing others, I believe. It is through cooperation that all of human society is made better for all.

So first, we must identity our own values, learn what it means to us to become beautiful, and do that. Then we need to learn the lessons of nurturing and connecting with others.

Later, it is very important to communicate your wisdom and truth to those who need to hear. You have certainly done that in this poem! Thanks.
