Rebel With a Cause

Since I was a wee one
able to string together a thought or two
I have taken great offence
to being told "No"

Don't get me wrong
I understand the stove top gets hot
before it gets red (Hard Lesson)
but still, for two simple letters
it drives me completely freaking batty,
and seldom enters MY vocabulary. (Don't get excited)

So, finding myself
somehow chained to this time, this space
where office attire
is supposed to inspire
I play my role.

I always did have a wonderful imagination
that, when all other modes of transportation failed,
would whisk me away to the world of my choosing.
Today, rounding the bend to 40
it continues to be, my most important and necessary
leaning post.
Especially, since finding myself tied
to a most conservative whipping post.

This road I have chosen (not laying any blame, fault is mine)
has proven, at times difficult.
When I come dancing home
excited and ready to show off new ink...
I see what they think
and can't help but smile.
They get mad
I simply drift, still smirking, off to one of my worlds.

When I get excited about a new track
they stutter back
and ask me if I'm ever going to grow up.
I laugh and scream "NEVER" at the top of my lungs.
I just have too much fun.
And have to belt every lyric
to make sure they hear it.

I dare you to do the same...right now
get in touch with that wild child
bring her back from the brink
She never deserved to be cast off
like white slippers after September.

She'll forgive you for forgetting her
for so many years, back
Where the wild things are.

And she'll remind you...you were once one too.

Aaron Kent (@MiniSixx) steps up to the bar today to make his debut as Head of the Wild Ones for the fantastic prompt he's brought to dVersePoets.  Where dedicating our pieces in honor of Maurice Sendak and his fantastic children's tale "Where the Wild Things Are".

I feel a lot like that at times, too... and have been know to sing at the top of my lungs with my kids. I think it's important to stay young and wild at heart, within limits of course.

I never want to lose the (wild) child inside of me, to have an imagination is a gift nowadays, and now Maurice Sendak has gone the future of imagination is looking a bit bleaker. But with poetry such as this, maybe the future is a bit brighter. Thank you for joining the wild rumpus Tash!

Tash, this made me cry, I have a poem which I never let anyone read about how I hated Peter Pan as a child but the reality was I envied him as he had a true child's spirit (everything I lost due to neglect and responsibilities at an entirely too early age). As a child I couldn't wait to grow up to escape, now I forget to nurture that inner child that needs to be wild. Ok, all this to say thank you, I really needed to hear this today.

I so agree with you, Natasha! We need to embrace our wild child and give her permission to belt out those songs at the top of her lungs. We need to continue to travel to our other worlds and to continue to say NO!! (as wild children often do!)

LOL I guess you are a girl who doesn't like being told 'NO' then.
Yes, we all need to stay in touch with out inner child, they still need to have fun too.
My mind says I'm not old, my body begs to differ though :)
Nice write Tash.

Of course Tash, never cast off the wild child inside us ~

And now you tell me that your spirit guide is a white wolf? Have you written about it? If not, you should ~

I enjoyed that Natasha, and thanks for helping me get involved!

That idea of never loosing touch with our inner touch, and never fully succumbing to what society expects or demands is a great one.

A cool piece I read recently from famous business consultant Seth Godin essentially said: 'They used to burn heretics at the stake, now heretics run companies like Google and Facebook'
Sing it loud and sing it proud! Awesome, awesome job!

The wild child is a phase of life in everyone, least of all a fault. All of us can certainly relate to it. Great for bringing back the memories, Tash! And a great write here, too!

I'd like your ink!!! My husband is an ink artist and I have some I love, an aquatic sleeve is my favorite!!

Great poem, you make great points and state them in a genuine voice.

I really like this bit:

"She never deserved to be cast off
like white slippers after September."

Smiles!

the wild child within has no boundaries. the wild adult still has boundaries, or ends up in jail.
when do we stop being a child

Love this Tash. The way you take us through the personal and weave in the imagination and the effect it has and the benefits it can give, really powerfully resonating in here at points, especially about mistakes, love the parentheses, such a great job. Thanks

Love....and the reason why is because I know these feelings so well! Stuck to the office- but bursting inside with ideas...as you say as well- getting older but still full of spirit...some people look at you like you're crazy!....this
poem speaks to me about never giving up....never growing up...and never giving a fuck! (about what other people think)

An honest, passionate poem, showing how much we must compromise to live in this world and yet someimes do not to stay spiritually alive. A wonderful poem.

Sorry for being a bit late in the day with my comment, thought I had already done it! You sound like a girl after my own heart, I have always been one for being told NO and doing it anyway... From my first underage tattoo and many other firsts beyond!!

I love this to pieces!
Wow! That was truly wild!

I love this, and relate strongly. "No" is fine, if there's a logical reason for it (like that hot stove). But "just because"? Never. Never then, never now. And that philosophy continually gets me in trouble.

(shrug)

I don't care.

You don't have to dare me twice! I am by nature rebellious and stubborn. And idislike No, Can't, shouldn't, don't and forbidden. Wonderfully empowering.
