How High a Cost

It is an infuriating, maddening and most mundane conundrum
This sense of entitlement
Where the fine line between self-worth and ego
is near invisible.

We can lose ourselves to selfishness
Somehow believe we deserve more than the next guy
because we've hurt more than the next guy.

I think it's safe to say, there's not anybody here
who isn't hurting.

Chasing the dreams bestowed upon us
by a system as plastic as the currency it's running.
We bow to a faceless megalomaniac
whose stench has destroyed our planet
and forfeited our children's future.
A beast that eats hope
to feed insatiable appetites for control.

And we run,
from one hungry soul to the next
taking more than we give
all in an effort to maintain ourselves.
We consume
grow bored
grow fat
grow lazy
Believing in the holy power of more.
Feeding the holes
with make-believe memories
of times that never were.

Fabricating relationships
on the thinnest of possible threads
We turn away from the truth
because it comes at a price
nearly none of us are willing to pay.

The last stanza took my breath away. Beautiful words...

You have stuffed this with truth. Harsh, but true, we do go through life at times making up what we wish our lives would be. Loved this. And thank you for the mention on twitter (This_is_Talon). I'll be re-reading and savoring this again and again.

Society is larger and more complex than anything we can possibly understand. It depends on both the rules we follow and our own human nature. When people go against these rules society gradually begins to slide in on it self.

This is a very thought provoking poem and really well written. Excellent!
This is a call to arms for integrity! Excellent!
