It Ain't Easy
It's not as simple as they would have you believe,
To fold yourself into the emotional expectations of another,
Place your own needs aside
Existing only to make them smile.
It means you have to smile too
No matter how dead you feel on the inside.
The occasional slip, sneer
Put off on PMS or too much caffeine.
It means pretending you're not hurting
It means pretending you're happy
It means you still haven't figured out
How to table your own needs and have them satisfied.
How many nights can you exist in a wasteland
Where the fires have been left untended
Smoking out the monster
You don't want to confess you are.
It's not as simple as they would have you believe
When the facade finally fractures
The smile finally breaks
How the hell do you get them to make sense of it
When you've denied yourself a back story?

Stellar write Poet~ this hit me particularly hard:
"How many nights can you exist in a wasteland
Where the fires have been left untended
Smoking out the monster
You don't want to confess you are."
You don't want to confess you are" line hit me pretty hard, too. Excellent poem!
