An Ode to Fairy Godmothers

It's a sin we've been sold a lie.
The tragedy is that we fell for it.
Fairytales as scripture
Repenting our sins to wicked stepmothers
While our sisters hold us down.
What star do you wish upon
That would allow you to control the heart of another?
If your definition of Prince Charming
Leaves no room for the hunter and the beast
How will you survive when the glass slipper shatters
Throwing shards deep into your heart?
If you think you've found him,
Forgive me for calling out your devil in disguise.

There is truth amongst the lies
The forest is dark and deep and castles house real dungeons,
But we are the ones who give birth to the monsters
No one is immune.
The apple was poisoned and we knew it
Still, we bit...
Hungry, deep in a part of ourselves we deny
Begging innocence when we find ourselves
Cramped & sweating with no kiss sweet enough to curb the pain

We are stone tablets engraved with the sins of our mothers
Who only wanted better
When they told us we could have anything we wanted,
While clearly pointing out our place
Somewhere between the truth and the lie
With a wave of a magic wand
Our faith in ourselves
Ensnared in illusions of perfection
We have no hope of living up to
