Ashamed ~ #OpenLinkNight @dVersePoets

These rolling hills at one time provided shelter
a safe passage through cumbersome trails
where one could find a leaning post
while the purity of rain
washed away our scent
from predators who roamed freely
not burdened by chain link
nor caged by barbwire

At one time we denied
WE were the predators
Still we continued
with our chopping, cutting
scalping, slaying
content to take
to rape
and plunder.
And so our legacy grew
attracting the concerned glare
of our slumbering mother
as we prepare to watch her bleed-out
denying death at our hands

Defined by imagined borders
we now bicker among ourselves
demanding our way be accepted.
Bullying, belittling
like the very monsters we claim to stand against.

With no respect for the ways of another
the culture of a civilization
we insist our ways are the only ways
for we are the educated
the civilized

Do you hear her laughing?
How much longer can you ignore it?

YOU are no better
YOU are no braver
YOU are the reason
the monsters win
and the mountains remain content to slumber
for mother has determined
WE are not worth saving.

Ashamed to be human
with all tears depleted
My love~fest has fractured
my "army" defeated.

I enjoyed an awesome rest over the weekend (meaning lots of time to ponder) and I'm back, ready and waiting for OpenLinkNight at dVersePoets.  The pub's bound to be hopping...hope you'll consider joining in.

dang....we are not worth saving...strong words tash...we can not allow ourselves the illusion that we are not responsible for where we are...the invisible or imagined borders will mean little as we go forward...find the love again...that is what will save us...

We are the reason the world is as it is. Hopefully enough of us will awaken to the realization before it is to late. Powerful words....

"Bullying, belittling

so unfortunately too often true, but, for me, not totally -

or we wouldn't know why there's a shame...

so from that, hope has sent its cry

best wishes, glad you've recovered, and glad to see your lines, passioned recognitions indeed!

thank you much!

The selfishness of our species knows no bounds and the shame is shared only by the bitter few... this a sad time to be a child of man :(

Arresting picture of what we have done to the earth and ourselves.

Too many..too many to feed, to care for, to accommodate. The world and human kind where the balance tilts, where squalor fills the fields and oceans, when poisons fill the air. We may be a blip on earth's history of beings -- meanwhile the insects crawl, chip, chirp and carry. They always survive.

This is so powerful!
Think on the life of a species and the age of the world...your poem hints at the answer

I so appreciate that you mentioned the imagined borders...the world is being screwed because of the imagined borders that separate us as being something other than ourselves, when we are just ourselves...no more, no less...but all fundamentally the same.

there is really not excuse for us...yet, I continually see Her adapt and overcome and heal whatever wound we make. She is a survivor and will be around long after us methinks.

Hmm so much to be found in here. For me it reads of sheep in wolves clothing, of people who believe their own hype too much and don't realise that there is a fine line between being strong, and being so strong you trample over the rest. That there is no one way to live (though kindness and respect are good places to start) and also the horrible realisation that just when you thought you had found safety in a situation, a person, a relationship, a community or whatever... the ugly still exists and you are left feeling like the last man standing on the side as the lunatics take over the asylum (to coin a phrase!).

A powerful tale of our 'civilized' society and very well put!

There are, indeed, times when I am ashamed to have to call myself a human being, with all the damage that they've -- we've -- done to the world, and want to do to the entirety of the universe. In many matters of philosophy, I defer to George Carlin's beliefs -- especially as to why we've never received a response from any other life forms out in the universe.

So very well said, Tash.

This has mythic qualities - you have presented a sombre narrative - sadly all too true

Now that I know how beautiful your voice is, it is hard to match these words up with what I have heard. Not that sad cannot be sung, or that sad cannot visit even the beautiful, but the contrast is stark. Great poem, reads well, some heady matters to contemplate and share. I'll be reading this later with friends. Always enjoy your work. And I have friends that love your voice too. Excellente!

As always, couldn't agree with you more,Tash. Your words are well chosen and succinct, and sadly true. We *are* the monsters. It's no fun being old and knowing you only have so many years left, but I also don't think I'd want to be young, and see what the next half-century is going to bring to our mother.

Oh my. Yes. Yes, this. I've been entertaining similar thoughts lately...

It's grim, but nicely expressed here.

We are the stewards of this planet Earth...and poor ones at that. You underscore that so well, sadly, here, Tash. The window is closing. We are still sleeping, the mountain is crying..the trees silently curse us. You remind us...but are we listening...x

I loved this one; and so cool that you and I dropped down into the field of language clover with similar thoughts, where my poem WE is well represented within the bodice of your piece. Agree with Brian, the line /mother has determined WE are not worth saving/
stings like a bitch, a rhetorical statement, like answering the inquiry, "Does this dress make me look fat?"

Afraid we are at war with her. Crazy. I was thinking of this myself today. And she's fighting back. Agree with you here. k.

...And yet, we too have the power to right the wrong, to re-build what has been destroyed, to purify what we have defiled. All that is needed is the will to do so.

it is hard to face being human some days. some days it feels lucky to be alive.

there's so much we have to learn and so many mistakes we made and still make...and yeah...sometimes i think we're not worth being saved but there's still hope and that's what holds us and keeps us going in the end and hopefully make us adjust our paths...
Lots to ponder in this one. I agree with much of it. Well said!

We have made so many mistake, sad and true. Powerful write, Tash.
I don't know what it is about you Natasha, but your poetry speaks to me. You write about real things. And you approach them in the abstract. Your metaphors and analogies speak to aspects of life we the reader can grasp. The length of poems do not bore. The way you write them inspires the reader to continue the journey until what you are saying is fully understood. Keep getting better my friend, I know I'm trying too.

Wow Natasha - sharp and succinct. And, sadly, quite timely. I was especially moved by this bit:

"from predators who roamed freely
not burdened by chain link
nor caged by barbwire"

Natasha- as always, sharp as a sword...extremely relevant poem - cant help but feel that we've gone too far and given too little of a fuck- and now it's too late. Personally, I think the human race (or I should say, the majority of the human race) is a plague- but then I'm getting older and grumpier....love reading your words....always so passionate and spilled straight from the heart

the truth is so painful to hold and own up to, but we have to take responsibility for our actions, this is how it is.

wonderful writing if a frightening topic.

Hard.. hard... HARD hitting.. and strongly worded. But if we lose hope that we can and should make a difference, who can save us?

I uttered those same words to a friend the other day... perhaps we are not worth saving.

I hear her laughing, all the time, through her tears.

And yet, perhaps foolishly, I hold onto hope.

Wow. You make us sound so pathetic. (Not saying we aren't, mind you...)
